I felt that Prezi embodied quite a few of the concepts that Manovich discussed,
especially, "In summary, if film technology, film practice, and film theory privilege the temporal development of a moving image, computer technology privileges spatial dimensions" (157). So, tada! This is my understanding of the important bits.
A few tips:
- There is a very limited prescribed pathway: rather, simply dive in and explore.
- It's pretty much impossible to navigate through here without making this fullscreen. To do so, click on "More" in the bottom right-hand corner of the Prezi display below.
As it says above, Manovich states that "[T]o qualify as an example of a montage, a new media object should fulfill two conditions: Juxtapositions of elements should follow a particular system, and these juxtapositions should play a key role in how the work establishes its meaning, and its emotional and aesthetic effects."
So. Am I succeeding? Why, or why not?
Other questions from my reading:
- Where do you see Manovich standing on the new "menu culture"? I think that my montage above puts a positive spin on it, but I'm not sure the author would agree. To me, he seems to have very mixed feelings about it. At times it seems that he's in favor of it, such as when he is talking about Djs and says things like "true are lies in the mix" (135. But at other times, he says things like, "While previously the great text of culture from which the artist created her own unique "tissue of quotations" was bubbling and shimmering somewhere below consciousness, now it has become externalized (and greatly reduced in the process)... (127).
How do we reconcile these ideas?
- I'm curious what the rest of you think. Are technological advances changing our perception and understanding of space and time?
- What do you think of the very last section of Manovich -- the part about the "potential aggressiveness of looking"? I feel that I've got a decent grip on what's being communicated throughout most of this section, but this conclusion throws me for a loop. Why does Manovich end with this discussion?
Sarah, I think it is fantastic that you not only explained what Manovich is saying, but did so in the terms that are being explained! I think it cannot be underappreciated that to really understand what Manovich is getting at, we have to delve into the subject matter, literally. There is no better way to make the most out of learning than to combine reading, doing and teaching all in one single blog post. :)
